First Lady Imelda Marcos, wife of President Ferdinand Marcos, was honoring the winners of the National Beautification and Cleanliness Contest in Nayong Pilipino in Pasay city when she was attacked and stabbed by Carlito Dimahilig, one of the still to be honored. The people witnessed the whole incident because the ceremony is currently being aired on television. Mrs. Marcos was able to protect with her arms. "When this man was hitting me with his bolo, I looked around, I said, 'I wonder who he is about to kill?' Little did I know that he was going to me, "said Mrs. Marcos. Congressman Jose Aspitas and Linda Amor Robles, the secretary of the beautification campaign, came to the rescue, but they also sustained injuries.
Dimahilig even waved the bolo he was holding so that it injured other people. The security team quickly protected the First Lady. They shot and killed Dimahilig. Mrs. Marcos sustained injuries to her arm and hand. He was immediately rushed to Makati Medical Center by helicopter and there, he received 75 stitches for the wound.
First Lady Marcos even managed to joke about the incident. “If there’s somebody who’s going to kill me, why do they have to be, why is it to be a bolo that is so ugly? I wish they put some kind of yellow ribbon, or some kind of a nice thing. Why such an ugly instrument? ”
According to Francisco Tatad, the Minister of Information, the incident may have been part of an assassination attempt by leftist groups on the Marcos couple. President Richard Nixon delivered a message to the Palace after the incident
